Assassin > Hero? New Trailer Drops for My Status as an Assassin Obviously Exceeds the Hero’s, Premiering This October

The upcoming fantasy anime My Status as an Assassin Obviously Exceeds the Hero’s has just released its first main trailer, and with it comes a preview of the opening song “Issen” by VESPERBELL. Scheduled to air this October, the anime adapts the light novel series by Matsuri Akai, originally published under Overlap Bunko and illustrated by Tozai.

The trailer also reveals new additions to the cast, including:

  • Sanae Kobayashi as Yoru
  • Konomi Tamura as Lia Lagoon
  • Junichi Suwabe as Saran Mithray

From Background Character to Deadly Assassin

The story follows Akira Oda, a quiet, forgettable student who unexpectedly gains the upper hand when his entire class is transported to a fantasy world. While others are granted heroic roles, Akira finds himself cast as an assassin—a role that suits his unassuming nature a little too well.

But things don’t add up. His suspiciously high stats and the kingdom’s odd behavior raise red flags. As he uncovers more, Akira realizes he’s been dropped into a world of political manipulation and betrayal. With the help of Amelia, an elven spirit medium, Akira starts digging into royal secrets—and earns the wrath of the very king who summoned him.

What follows is a battle of survival and revenge, where the “hero” may not be the strongest one in the room.

Staff and Studio

The anime is being produced by Sunrise, with direction by Nobuyoshi Habara (Fafner in the Azure, Amaim Warrior at the Borderline). The series composition and script are being handled by Kunihiko Okada, known for The Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy.

Other notable staff include:

  • Character Designers: Hirona Okada (Gundam Build Metaverse) & Kaori Saito
  • Monster Design: Rihiro Yamane (Magic Knight Rayearth)
  • Main Animator: Mitsuru Ishihara (RIN, The Faraway Paladin)
  • Music Composer: Satoshi Igarashi (TOKYO LOGIC, Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out!)

Voice Cast

  • Takeo Otsuka as Akira Oda
  • Saku Mizuno as Amelia Rose Quartz

Originally a web novel posted to Shousetsuka ni Narou in early 2017, the story has since spawned both light novel and manga adaptations. With the anime debut around the corner, Assassin vs. Hero is shaping up to be another take on the increasingly crowded but still compelling “otherworld revenge” subgenre.
