Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM Becomes Highest-Earning Film in Gundam Franchise

Good news for all of you Gundam fans! Mobile Suit Gundam Seed FREEDOM’s staff said on Tuesday that the movie had made an amazing 2.68 billion yen ($17.94 million USD!) since Monday, February 12. That’s a whopping 1.63 million seats. Do you believe it? This means that it made more money than Gundam III: Encounters in Space, making it the highest-grossing Gundam movie ever.

The Movie’s Success

The movie received a huge response in Japan, where it was shown for ten days straight and made an amazing 1,215,558 yen, which is about 13.24 million USD. Pretty cool, right? Japan’s 352 theaters showed the movie for the first time on January 26. It made a huge 1,065,953,130 yen in its first weekend. This one even made it to the top of the list! Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM is now the biggest hit in the history of the Gundam series in its first week.

The Franchise’s Top-Grossing Film

Let us now remember the good old days. Mobile Suit Gundam: Encounters in Space is the first Gundam movie to make a lot of money. This movie is the third in a run of movies based on the Mobile Suit Gundam anime TV show. It made a huge 2.3 billion yen, which is about 15.5 million USD, at the box office in 1982.

About Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM

What’s the story of this movie? Let me explain it to you. The Japanese website Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM says this about the movie’s plot:

The Story

Imagine a world called Cosmic Era (C.E.) where there are two kinds of people: Coordinators, who were genetically modified to have smarter and stronger bodies, and Naturals, who were born naturally. Because they had different ideas about who they were, these two groups used to fight.

A plan called the Destiny Plan was put forward at this time. Its goal was to make the world war-free, but everyone would have to play a part. People fought against this plan, though, because they wanted to keep their rights and have hope for the future.

The war was finally over after a lot of suffering. But what do you know? All over the world, fights and hatred are still going on between these two groups of people. This battle will never end.

Now for the important question: when will other places show this great movie? We’re afraid we don’t know the answer to that yet. Don’t worry, though—I’m sure Gundam fans all over the world will be able to see this great movie soon!
